Pundits make their Man City vs Burnley predictions

City will be looking to build on a 3-0 win over Arsenal in their first game back as they welcome Burnley to the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City enjoyed a successful return to Premier League action on Wednesday evening with a comfortable win over Arsenal at the Etihad.

Goals from Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden gave City a 3-0 win and ensured that Liverpool would have to wait a little bit longer to claim their first Premier League title.

The return of the Premier League means a quick turnaround between games, with City back at the Etihad again on Monday, where they host Burnley in what is the Clarets’ first game back.

City won the reverse fixture 4-1 at Turf Moor courtesy of a Gabriel Jesus brace and goals from Rodri and Riyad Mahrez.

Here’s what the pundits are predicting will happen tonight…

“This will be Burnley’s first game back and Sean Dyche’s side are the one team who might buck the trend and be at it straight away – being competitive, and tackling.

“But City have the massive advantage of having played once already, on top of the fact they are a much better team of course.

“Burnley might still be full of running, harassing and chasing – but only for 70 minutes, not for 90.”

Charlie Nicholas, Sky Sports

“Arsenal were atrocious but my goodness, Kevin De Bruyne was unbelievable. Appreciation of other people’s qualities is key. Raheem Sterling could have scored three or four, but De Bruyne was on a different planet. His timing and weight of pass, running with the ball, awareness of positions was all second-to-none. Arsenal were dreadful in defence but he can take advantage in a second.

“I was embarrassed when he was sat in the stand after he was substituted, and I thought I saw a bead of sweat on his head! He did not need to break sweat, he was brilliant.

“Burnley will be far more physical than what Arsenal were. Any silly free-kicks, the referee will be on top of them immediately. He is not under scrutiny to protect anybody, but he will be booking them and letting them know who the boss is.

“The likes of Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero looked hungry when they came on. It was great fitness for them without any real trouble. The pace and fluency was back quickly and I am expecting that to continue against Burnley.” Prediction: City 3-0 Burnley

Michael Owen, BetVictor

“Manchester City played their first game back in the Premier League on Wednesday night and finished up cruising to a home win against Arsenal.

“I was a little unsure about what sort of team Pep Guardiola would start with and how he would set them up but it was certainly business as usual. They looked full of running and at times, played some fantastic football.

“Burnley are having another solid season after flirting with the relegation zone earlier in the campaign. They are now comfortably placed in mid-table and only Liverpool (27), Manchester City (19) and Arsenal (16) have taken more points from their games in the Premier League in 2020 than the Clarets (15).

“They have a very solid team and I know they are a great bunch of lads because they own two horses at my stables and they visit regularly. However, they are taking on one of the best teams in the world in Manchester City and have won just 1 of 11 Premier League meetings between the sides, and that was way back in 2015. In fact, Manchester City have won the last three meetings at the Etihad between the sides in all competitions by an aggregate score of 10 goals to one, and I’m going for a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Citizens.”
